VDI Documentation Initiative

VDI Documentation Suite Modernization for DOJ Data Domain.

Environment / Company Type
Federal Government / Enterprise IT Infrastructure Environment

Context

The organization operated within a large enterprise government IT environment that relied heavily on Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solutions to support remote users, contractors, analysts, and administrative personnel across multiple departments.

The environment included:

  • Virtual desktop onboarding procedures
  • Secure remote access workflows
  • Password management integrations
  • Multi-team support escalation paths
  • User provisioning and access documentation
  • End-user troubleshooting guidance for VDI-related incidents

Documentation was stored across multiple repositories including SharePoint and Confluence, with content consumed by both IT support teams and internal end users.

Problem

The existing VDI documentation ecosystem had become fragmented and difficult to maintain due to:

  • Inconsistent doc formatting between teams
  • Outdated onboarding procedures
  • Lack of standardized troubleshooting workflows
  • Missing ownership information
  • Duplicate documentation
  • Limited visibility into escalation paths and support responsibilities

Contribution

I was responsible for organizing, updating, and standardizing documentation related to the organization’s VDI environment and supporting infrastructure.

My contributions included:

  • Authoring and revising VDI onboarding and user guide documentation
  • Creating structured workflow documentation for remote access support
  • Standardizing article templates across knowledge repositories
  • Collaborating with engineers, analysts, and IT stakeholders to validate technical accuracy
  • Improving escalation documentation for support teams handling VDI

I also worked closely with SMEs to identify gaps in the support experience and convert undocumented troubleshooting practices into formalized knowledge articles.

Impact

The VDI Documentation Suite initiative improved documentation consistency and operational efficiency across the support organization.

Key outcomes included:

  • Reduced dependency on tribal knowledge for common VDI support issues
  • Improved onboarding experience for support staff and end users
  • Faster ticket routing and escalation accuracy
  • Increased documentation standardization across platforms
  • Better visibility into ownership and governance responsibilities
  • Improved support readiness during enterprise tool rollouts

The initiative also helped create a more scalable documentation structure capable of supporting future infrastructure.
